DEALING WITH DEBS

Dave Atherton from Freedom to Choose was invited to debate the smoking issue with head ASH harridan Debs Arnott and I know who came out as the reasonable one.

Debs did her usual trick of trying to discredit the opposition and dismissed Dave as "not an expert" but then Debs herself hasn't got a degree in Epidemiology either but I wouldn't be surprised if she has one in the dark art of spin AKA professional lying.

It was quite a sad event to see her desperately pumping out old propaganda on Japanee housewives which Dave discredited in an instant because he is well informed and he does his research.

You see smokerphobes like Debs will never know the truth about smoking because my guess is that she's never done it or she's one of these former part time, temporary smokers who had a go, didn't like it, quit and then began to moralise about others who chose to continue - or she's the sort who was bullied into quitting and thinks that now gives her the right to shove other people around.

I've had my share of anti-smokers telling me they know better than I do about the effects of smoking despite my 43 years experience of active smoking from childhood, smoking when pregnant, and being a baby born from a smoker's womb. But they are still arrogant enough to think they know better.

For two days I've been given a right verbal kicking, hounded and insulted, debating with antis who just get more and more bizarre each time with new and wonderful health scare inventions.

They really do believe that tobacco is as dangerous as the fall out from Chernobyl but this fear is born from a phobia and not scientific investigation. I really think they need psychological help. I never expected that care in the community would mean the nutters making public policy even when no one has elected them to do it.

Dave says on his Facebook page that he has always been a polite smoker. I used to be that but now the law dictates where I can and can't smoke, I'm afraid the gloves are off. I am as nasty as those who are nasty to me. You can't debate with these people because their minds are poisoned.

I don't want this fight but they started it by forcing me into a position of self defence. They have caused the biggest ever social division in this country than I have ever seen in my lifetime.

They have given bigots a group of people they can legally hate. One dickhead on the Echo debate even said banning smokers from employment was a good thing. "It'll make them stop" he said even though I pointed out that it would make them starve. He thought that was hilarious and then they wonder why we get so angry.

Debs says in the CNN interview that smokers have no rights and we are second class citizens. I wonder if that is what Govt is paying her for. I've said before this Govt is corrupt. Debs has proved it. Any Govt that gets into bed with that bigoted hag is not looking at the issue in the round but being fed nonsense that it swallows either because our leaders are stupid or because they hate smokers too.

In any debate on this issue, the only fair outcome and the bottom line is choice. Choice for smokers to meet other smokers and socialise in peace without harassment and choice for non-smokers who don't like being around smokers. Most don't care and enjoy smokers' company because they have not been taught yet to hate us. Anti-smokers are a different breed who design new ways to punish us. They deserve an island to themselves away from decent people.

They drive their car, take planes, abuse our environment how they will and then moan about how ONLY tobacco is a health risk and everything they do is fine. They make judgements on people who smoke - filthy, dirty, selfish, addicts - and yet they know nothing of any of us, how much we smoke, where, when, or even why, and what we teach our children about smoking. They are convinced that as soon as a baby pops it's head out of the womb, a smoker will pop a fag in its gob and light it up.

And those heroines who take control of their own bodies and children from the fanatical clutches of the anti-smoking industry are simply and unfairly thrown to the media dogs.

Leg Iron's post also shows how it is only the anti-smokers who keep smoking in the public eye - perhaps they really want a new generation to despise because where would they be without the hate of a selective group that brings them so much comfort?

During my debates on forums yesterday and today, one anti was arrogant enough to say : "All smokers want to quit. Those who say they do not are lying."

Another said we have no rights and yet I would argue that the anti-smokers right to this mythical "clean air" ends where our right to association begins.

Then there are those we've never met who insist they are only trying to protect us from ourselves and want to help us. Why? That is not their aim. Worst still is when they try and tell us what we should or shouldn't do with our own families. To use their twee and infantile phrase I say : "butt out" of our business.

Hopefully, Dave's exposure of horrid little bigot Arnott in public is the first step back to normality, common sense and what we want - a life in peace free from harassment where we can socialise a million miles away from people like Debs who take hate as their guide, lies as their evidence, and profit as their reward.

Dave has shown the wider public that smokers - especially lifelong smokers - know better than anyone about smoking especially those who have never smoked.

Debs on the other hand came across as desperate, scared, and like a rabbit caught in headlights. One must ask if Govt backs her stance that we are second class citizens.

I'm sure whatever we say Debs will just schream and schream until she's sthick before running off to tell tales to her friends Mr Lansley and Nanny Milton to sort out the nasty smokers who won't play her game and accept their own Denormalisation.

That woman needs to get a life and stop scrounging tax payers money for her living. She's worse than a benefit fraudster because she takes far more than she deserves by lying her way to the bank.

I do so hope her days are numbered but we will have to wait and see how corrupt this NuGovt is.

I can't embed the video code but Dave's CNN interview is here Enjoy

POWERFUL POSTS

A poignant and thought provoking post from TBY over at the F2C blog.

Still think the war on tobacco is about health?

I have nothing to say about this post except OH's words are so powerful they must be read.

Another thought provoking read to end the weekend, is this piece which claims a report that cannabis could cure cancer was buried by Govt for 36 years.

UPDATE : And just to add balance to Old Holborn's powerful rant on Isreal.

FREEZING IN THE WIND

Over at the F2C BLOG someone called Citizen E has re-written the words to a Bob Dylan song and called it A Battle Anthem For Smokers. See comment three.

Join the Resistance!

A BATTLE ANTHEM FOR SMOKERS.

How many ships took those men far away
To fight and suffer death and pain
How many men in both world wars
Never saw the light of day again
How many men were broken and returned
To be treated as heroes every one
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many years have passed since that time
Are veterans treated just the same
How many stand in the wind and the rain
Still proud but questioning in pain
How many feel that they’ve been betrayed
By a country to which they gave their all
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many roads must a man walk down
Before they call him a man
How many times must he prove himself
Like a soldier in Afghanistan
How many times when he comes home
Is he treated like an outcast not a man
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind.

How many times must the questions be asked
And dogma given in reply
How many heroes in the twilight of their years
Are denied compassion till they die
How many zealots should hang their heads in shame
For a law that is pie in the sky
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

How many persecutors of the old and infirm
Whose war cry is de-normalise them all
Have forced upon society a vicious smoking ban
That contains no compromise at all
How have the population of a country once so great
Stood by and never heard the call
The answer my friend is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind

When will the people say undo what you have done
And return the voice of reason to the land
When will the politicians listen to the call
Of society divided by a ban
When will 15 Million smokers rally to the call
And defend the right of dignity for all
The answer “Now my friend” is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind.

FACT AND LOONS

I was going to write about the psychopathic (I,m told I have to make my opinion based on fact clear for those who are too stupid to distinguish between the two) ranters in the comments section of the Daily Mail but Dick Puddlecote describes it far better than I could.

While these idiots (opinion)who are so health obsessed (opinion) that they believe the crap on 3rd hand smoke (opinion) astounds me. (Fact.)

Meanwhile one of the orchestrators (fact) of the scam (fact) that is third hand smoke Shiela Duffy at ASH has started her own blog which doesn't welcome debate. (fact)

My guess (obviously opinion) is that she's scared (opinion) of debate in case the arguments used to encourage the above loons (opinion) soon begin to fall apart (Fact.)

I hope I've made myself clear.

WILL HE LISTEN ?

Dear Mr Brown,

With reference to the custodial sentence placed on Mr Nick Hogan, a link to one of the national media headlines has been added for your perusalhttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1254126/Pub-

There are many who are most concerned at the imprisonment of Mr Nick Hogan courtesy of Bolton Crown Court on friday 26th Feb, 2010 for non payment of fines and costs incurred in relation to smokeban law infringements. The total costs involved amount to a sum of £10,236. We feel that this may, in part, be due to vastly inflated fines for minor infringements and Bolton Council claiming the unbelievable sum of £7,236 in 'costs'. Could these costs be viewed as excessive, especially considering the current economic climate and the undeniable decline in the pub trade, of which Mr Hogan was a part?

Mr Hogan was imprisoned for 6 months for non payment, yet a violent female in Brighton was only gaoled for 2 months...

A Dungiven man was imprisoned for 3 months for serious sexual abuse...

A Merseyside teenager jailed for four months for 'despicable and
horrendous' animal cruelty...

and a criminal found guilty of child battering and abuse was only gaoled for 6 months...

All four instances have shown extreme violence toward others, including
animals, yet none of the cited cases have anything to do with money or peaceable objection to a law that is blatantly wrong. Is it right or just that crimes of such a horrendous nature as portrayed above should receive less of a custodial sentence than Mr Hogan?

Mr Nick Hogan has merely 'stood up' for his rights as a businessman and the dignity and rights of his fellow man by allowing them to smoke in his pub. Only a heartless coward would send the elderly and infirm out into the wet or cold to enjoy that which has been enjoyed for hundreds of years and made our public houses the great places they used to be!
As a businessman he has rights regarding his property. The smokeban law, which is failing abysmally, has removed that very basic right of determining how he runs his own business. Not only that but the system has now created a criminal, who now has a prison record for doing what any sane and sensible businessman would do-look after his customers.

We respectfully request that he be released from this custodial sentence with immediate effect and a more suitable punishment be substituted, for he is not a criminal - unlike the cases cited above. The system, since 1st July, 2007, has created a new 'cash cow' for your government; they are called smokers! But, Mr Brown, smokers have rights and more importantly, smokers are voters-12 million of them. This action of imprisoning Mr Hogan for 6 months shows that the system now thinks more of money than human misery and businesses.

You will note that I have copied in the SUN Newspaper as I am hopeful that they will be happy to pick up on this abomination of injustice.

Yours sincerely

BRITISH MINORITY GROUP COMPLAINS AT GRAPHIC VIOLENCE

Many of you have probably heard by now through the Freedom2Choose blog that a visit to complain about the Birmingham North and East PCT's graphically violent video which shows a smoker getting beaten to death is to be removed from the web.

I was so outraged when I first saw the video that I complained. The background to why and how it was made, and the wider campiagn that it was part of, was explained but I didn't feel that it justified what I saw as a very irresponsible video which I honestly believe could incite violence against smokers.

Dave Atherton at Freedom2Choose agreed to come with. He is someone very useful to have on side because of the meticulous research he has done on the issue of smoking and health and the talent he has for quoting statistics when it matters.

Also present to add his voice to the complaint was Dudley Councillor Malcolm Davis (pictured above) . It was very important that the complaint had some kind of political punch and a local aspect to it so the BEN PCT couldn't wriggle out of it by saying it wasn't meant to be seen by a wider audience, which they did.

It is important to add that UKIP was the ONLY party to lend this support. Others chose not to. If I could have mustered representatives from ALL political parties that would have been great but the others were not interested.

Malcolm, a non-smoker, was appalled by the video which he could not access on his council computer because it was blocked as having "unsuitable content" because of the graphic violence. When he managed to see it via a friend's computer, his resposne was "revolting."

The very nice ladies we saw at the PCT from the Communications, complaints, performance and organisational development, and health improvement departments, explained that there was no malice intended by the campaign which was aimed specifically at white males aged between 35 and 55 from their area. They also claim that "hardened" smokers were used as a focus group which approved the video.

I found that hard to believe and I was particulalry astounded when the ladies quoted the figure of 70% of smokers say they want to quit and the PCT has a duty to help them.

I pointed out that I know of many smokers who I chat to outside of public places, and many I interact with on pro-choice forums, who would disagree with the 70% figure. The ladies said I probably talk to the 30% who don't want to quit. It seems no-one has a "duty" to help them and they can be justifiably ignored.

When I pointed out that I believe the NHS is the enemy of the smoker, and even if I was dying from a heart attack I wouldn't go to hosiptal because of the way we are treated, I was told that hospitals would care for smokers in the same dignified way as non-smokers. I asked if they would have a campaign pointing that out to those smokers who don't want to quit and the answer was no. Of course not. I was therefore left with the assumption that 30% of smokers in this country don't matter to anyone at all, except, it would seem, UKIP.

The ladies disupted that smokers were stigmatised until Dave and I pointed out that being excluded from every public place in Britian was certainly evidence of such stigmatisation.

We also had a general discussion about NRT, and other quit smoking methods that were far more effective than those offered by the NHS. It was pointed out that neither the NHS, and their pharmacuetical sponsors, or the Tobacco companies could claim moral high ground as both compete to provide smokers with nicotine and money - billions of it - was the motivating factor.

I also informed the ladies of violent incidents and deaths by smoking ban that that have occurred since July 2007 between smokers and anti-smokers including those in the Uk of a father who killed his wife because she wouldn't give up smoking and his children so that they could be with her, and the father who beat his 12 year-old son for smoking.

Dave pointed out that those who hate smokers would see the video as justification to attack because they wouldn't see the analogy that was intended.

The video cost about £10,000 to make. Coun Davis said the money would have been better used in direct patient care than to propagate violence against a minority group.

The PCT tried to say it couldn't remove the video. I said if it wasn't removed then my complaint would be taken to the Ombudsman. Dave pointed out that Jane De Ville Almond, the anti-smoking nurse who called for smokers to be left to die if they didn't give up, had a video of her bigoted views removed by claiming copywright and the PCT could do the same.

They said they would remove it in two weeks when the campaign ends. I said that was too long and I would like to see it gone immediately. The PCT said they would review it and put in writing their decision. That hasn't come through yet but as F2C has sent out a press release, and blogged about it, I thought I should too - although I would have rather waited for that confirmation to come through first.

One final point of note is that the PCT said it hadn't received any other complaints. I know that at least one was sent through and several others have been received by F2C.

This is yet another victory for the pro-choice movment and smokers who have had enough and are not prepared to sit back and allow such violent and untrue propaganda against them to continue.
